We launched our first device: introducing Rorschach

We did it - we launched our first device.

After approximately seven months of talking through ideas, researching, designing, prototyping, and testing, our first visual instrument, Rorschach, is now available for preorder in both DIY kit and pre-built versions. Seeing Rorschach out in the world, and experiencing the response it has already received, feels genuinely special.

Rorschach began as a series of conversations about what we wanted from a video synthesizer. We were interested in creating something that felt immediate, playful, and hands-on - a device that could generate compelling black and white visuals straight out of the box, but would also reward deeper experimentation through control voltage, gates, and audio modulation.

Although Decadebridge has a catalogue of desktop and Eurorack audio devices, neither of us really understood what the demand might be for a dedicated video synthesis device like Rorschach. Video synthesis occupies a more niche space than audio synthesis, and it was difficult to gauge how many people were actively looking for hardware tools focused on live visuals, experimental video, and audio-to-video workflows.

The response so far has been reassuring and encouraging. We’ve heard from visual artists, musicians, VJs, and modular users who are excited by the idea of a compact, affordable entry point into hardware video synthesis, as well as from more experienced users who see Rorschach as a flexible addition to an existing setup.

Rorschach is designed to generate its own patterns, with controls for position, scale, form, and randomness, allowing it to function as a standalone visual instrument. At the same time, it opens up when connected to other gear - whether that’s a modular Eurorack system, external CV and gate sources, or audio signals used to push the visuals in unpredictable directions. It can also convert the video signal into sound, creating a unique drone voice via its audio output.

Launching Rorschach is just the beginning for Lumatic Visual Devices. This first release has given us confidence that there is a real appetite for experimental visual hardware, and it’s already shaping how we think about future devices, refinements, and ideas.

If you’re interested in Rorschach, you can find full details - including preorder options for both the DIY kit and pre-built device - on our product page. We’ll be using this blog to share development updates, build insights, and behind-the-scenes looks at what we’re working on next.

Thanks to everyone who has supported, shared, and shown enthusiasm so far. We’re excited to see what people create with Rorschach.
