Rorschach Update: Shipping, DIY Guide & Our First Retailer

It’s been another busy week at Lumatic Visual Devices, and we wanted to share a quick update on Rorschach production, shipping, and what’s coming next.

The short version: Rorschachs are shipping, more are about to ship, the DIY build guide is now live, and our first retailer has officially listed the device.

For a small two-person operation building hardware by hand, it’s been a huge few weeks.

Rorschachs Are Shipping

The first batch of Rorschach hybrid analog/digital video synthesizers has now started reaching customers.

Seeing photos and videos of Rorschach units arriving with customers around the world has been incredibly rewarding. We’ve also started receiving some great feedback from early users experimenting with analog video synthesis, CRT visuals, and live performance setups.

It’s always a nerve-wracking moment shipping the first units of a new instrument, but the response has been very encouraging.

Thank you to everyone who pre-ordered and supported the project early.

Another 52 Prebuilt Units Shipping Next Week

Production has been moving steadily and we’re currently preparing another batch of 52 prebuilt Rorschach devices which are scheduled to ship early next week.

Each unit is built and tested by hand. That means every device goes through assembly, calibration, and testing before leaving the workshop.

With just two of us building the hardware, production takes time, but it also means we can keep quality control extremely tight.

If you’re waiting for your unit, thank you for your patience. The demand for Rorschach has been fantastic and we’re working through orders as quickly as possible while keeping build quality high.

DIY Build Guide Now Available

For those building the Rorschach DIY kit, the official Rorschach DIY Build Guide is now live.

You can now view and download the guide directly from our website.

The manual walks through the complete build process, including:

  • component placement
  • assembly tips
  • contents of kit

Whether you’re an experienced builder or this is your first hardware project, the guide should make assembling the kit straightforward.

DIY Kits Shipping Soon

Alongside the prebuilt units, we are also preparing the first shipments of Rorschach DIY kits.

These should begin shipping the week after next, along with another batch of prebuilt devices.

DIY kits have been especially popular with the synth DIY and experimental electronics community, so we’re excited to see what people build and how they customise their units.

Our First Retailer: Elevator Sound

Another big milestone this week is that Elevator Sound in Bristol now has Rorschach listed on their website.

This is the first retailer to carry Rorschach, and we’re really pleased to be working with them as we really love what they do.

Elevator Sound has been part of the UK’s modular synth and electronic instrument scene for years, so it feels like a great fit for the device.

More retailers will be announced very soon as we expand availability.

For now, though, it’s exciting to see Rorschach appearing outside of our own website for the first time.

Shipping Deadlines Still On Track

We’re still on track to meet our shipping deadlines, although it’s fair to say it will be very close to the wire.

Hand-building hardware always involves a few unpredictable steps along the way, but production is moving in the right direction and units are leaving the workshop every week.

If you’ve placed a preorder, we truly appreciate your patience while we work through the queue.

The support the project has received so far has been incredible.

Seeing Rorschach Out in the World

One of the most exciting parts of the past few weeks has been seeing Rorschach used in real setups.

Users are already experimenting with:

  • CRT television stacks
  • video feedback loops
  • live projection visuals
  • Modular video rigs
  • hybrid analog and digital video workflows

Rorschach was designed to be a hands-on visual instrument, and it’s great to see artists immediately exploring those possibilities.

We’ll be sharing more user videos and setups as they start appearing.

Thanks for the Support

Launching a new hardware instrument is always a bit of a leap into the unknown, and the response to Rorschach so far has been beyond what we expected.

From preorders to festival demos to the first customer feedback, the support from the video synthesis and experimental music community has been fantastic.

We’re excited to keep building, shipping, and developing new ideas from here.

More updates soon.
