Behind the Scenes: What We’re Working on at Lumatic Visual Devices

Sometimes the most interesting part of building new instruments isn’t just the finished product, but everything that happens along the way.

This week, we wanted to share a bit of what’s been going on behind the scenes at Lumatic Visual Devices, how Rorschach continues to evolve, and what we’ve been focusing on as we move closer to shipping.

Refining Rorschach Through Real-World Testing

As Rorschach moves from prototype to production, one of our biggest priorities has been real-world testing. That means not just checking how it behaves on the bench, but running it through the kinds of setups we know people will actually use.

CRT televisions, analog video mixers, modular systems, capture devices, all slightly different environments, all important. These tests often highlight small details that don’t always show up in ideal conditions, and they’re exactly the kind of things we want to catch early.

The goal is simple: when Rorschach lands in your hands, it should just work.

Small Changes, Big Improvements

One thing we’ve learned (again and again) is that tiny hardware changes can make a huge difference. Component values, signal levels, and tolerances all matter when you’re working with analog video.

Over the past couple of weeks we’ve been making small refinements, double-checking outputs, and confirming compatibility across a wide range of displays and mixers. Each tweak brings the system closer to where we want it to be: stable, predictable, and expressive.

This kind of work is essential, and it’s one of the reasons we’re committed to building and testing everything properly before shipping.

Building a Foundation, Not Just a Product

Lumatic Visual Devices is still very much at the beginning of its journey. Right now, that means focusing on doing a few things well rather than trying to do everything at once.

For us, that looks like:

  • Designing tools we genuinely want to use ourselves
  • Taking the time to test thoroughly
  • Listening closely to early feedback
  • Building relationships with artists, shops, and the wider synth and video community
  • Rorschach is the first step, not the end goal.

What’s Next?

Over the coming weeks, we’ll be sharing more about:

  • How Rorschach fits into different workflows
  • Tips and ideas for patching and performance
  • News about retailers and availability
  • Updates as we begin shipping

If you’ve been following along so far - thank you. The response has been genuinely encouraging, and we’re excited to keep building from here.

As always, if you have questions, ideas, or just want to share what you're working on, feel free to get in touch.

BIG LOVE,

Lumatic Visual Devices
